This year for the Diwali snacks, I am taking a different route. Instead of traditional savory snacks, I am going to share all quick and easy chaat recipes.

Chaat for Diwali

I know chaat is not a norm in our household. We usually make traditional savories like karasev, kara boondi, mixture, murukku, omapodi, etc. I wanted to share something similar this year, but last week I had some oil splattering during frying, and I decided to skip fried goodies and share easy chaat recipes. Usually, we have Diwali parties and potlucks at our friend’s place, and bhel or samosa chole chaat will be there always for an appetizer. I already shared a samosa chole, so I decided to share a healthy bhel served in tortilla chips. These chaats are perfect for any Diwali or holiday parties, or you can treat yourselves to these recipes irrespective of the occasion.

What is Chaat

Chaat is a popular Indian savory snack. Chaat is more related to Indian street food, and the highlight of chaat recipes is you can relish them any time and for any occasion. These irresistible sweet and tangy, and spicy chaat recipes are perfect appetizers and excellent tea-time snacks.

Sprouted Beans Bhel

Bhel is more like an Indian salad with puffed rice. Bhelpuri, a popular chaat recipe, is a mixture of puffed rice, deep-fried papri, and assorted veggies and chutneys and spices. But today, I am going to share a healthy bhel with sprouted mung and moth beans. Check out the other bhel recipes from my blog below. You can buy store-bought sprouted beans, or you can soak and sprout the beans at home as well. I have explained the process in the matki usal post.

Tortilla Bhel Cups | Sprouted Bhel Served in Tortilla Cups

Typically bhel is served as a salad, but I want to make it like a bite-sized mess-free appetizer. So I am serving my bhel in the tortilla cups. I used the store-bought Tostitos scoops, which are perfect for this bhel. The salty and crunchy chip complements and intensifies the flavor of the bhel further. All you have to do for this recipe is to prepare the bhel mix by combining the ingredients and then filling it in the Tostitos scoops and serve. It’s a great grab and go party appetizer and will be a crowd-pleaser. The bhel is healthy with sprouted beans and veggies. Serving it with chips is going to add some calories. So if you are calorie conscious, you can skip the chips and relish the bhel as is.

Ingredients Required for the Bhel

While you can make everything from scratch for this recipe, you can also opt for store-bought chutneys and even sprouted beans and make it a semi-homemade recipe. Depending upon your time and schedule, you can opt for homemade or semi-homemade.  Once you have the chutney and sprouted beans ready, you can whip this recipe in less than 15 minutes. You can very well prepare the sprouts and chutney well ahead and refrigerate. I have the green chutney and sweet chutney (both dates and raisins) on my blog. Do check it out. Now coming to the measurements, there is no set measure. You can customize it as per your taste preference.

How to make the sprouted beans bhel and serve it with tortilla chips

In a mixing bowl, add the puffed rice, sprouted beans, tomatoes, onions, cucumbers, 2 tbsp of carrot, dates and tamarind chutney, green chutney, 2 tbsps of cilantro, and the chaat masala.Mix them well. Make sure to combine the chutneys thoroughly. Now take the Tostitos scoops, add a tablespoon or two of the prepared bhel in the scoops and make the tortilla bhel cups. Serve immediately.

Recipe Notes:

If you are puffed rice is not crispy, you can roast them for a minute or two in a pan. Do not roast beyond that. As the bhel becomes soggy with the chutneys, make sure to mix and prepare the bhel just before serving.Adjust the chutneys and chaat masala according to your taste. You can use store-bought chutney or homemade ones. Instead of dates and tamarind chutney, you can also use raisins and tamarind chutney.I did not add any salt as I used the salted Tostitos scoops, and with the chutneys, the seasonings were perfect for us. You can salt if needed. You can also add black salt.Adjust the veggies as per your preference. Also, you can use either mung bean or moth bean sprouts. I went with a combination of both. You can find how to sprout the beans in my matki usal post. Do check it out.
