Paruppu Kadaiyal

I am sure, dal tadka is everyone’s favorite comfort food. And I have repeated this multiple times – being a vegetarian; I always look at different ways to include protein in our diet. So these dal recipes play a significant role in bringing that protein to our meal. This dal is my version of plain toor dal tadka or as we say in Tamil Paruppu Kadaiyal.   It is a simple, healthy and comforting dish.

No Onion No Garlic Paruppu Kadaiyal

Of course, you can prepare this with onion and garlic. But I kept it simple and went without any onion and garlic. Also, I did not use green chilies or red chilies and used cayenne pepper for this dal. There is no strict measurements and ingredient set for this dal. You can add vegetables and adjust the spices as per your preference. I have a whole of dal recipes from different Indian states, and you can find all the dal recipes in this link. And now here is my simple paruppu kadaiyal recipe.

Paruppu Kadaiyal | Toor Dal Tadka Recipe

Ingredients:

Toor Dal / Split Pigeon Peas – ½ cup Turmeric powder – ¼ tsp Salt – 1 tsp Cayenne Pepper – ¼ tsp Tomatoes – 2 Chopped Cilantro – 2 tbsps

For seasoning:

Oil / Ghee –  2 tsp Mustard seeds – 1tsp Hing – ½ tsp Curry Leaves – 5

Steps:

Chop the tomatoes into four halves. Wash the dal and pressure cook it along with chopped tomatoes and turmeric powder for three whistles in the pressure cooker. Let the pressure release and remove the tomato skin. Now heat a pan and add oil. When the oil is hot, add the mustard seeds, hing and curry leaves. As they start to splutter, add the cooked dal along with tomato and mash it well. Add salt and allow it simmer. Finally, sprinkle some cayenne pepper and cilantro and turn off the heat. Paruppu Kadaiyal is ready.

Notes:

I made this without any onion and garlic. But you can skip tomatoes and add onion and garlic or include them all. Adjust the salt and spices as per your preference. You can use masoor dal instead of toor dal or a mix of both toor and masoor dal.
