Panchamrutham or Panchamirtham
Panchamrita means five amruthams or amrtas used in Hindu worship which basically consists of milk, honey, sugar, yogurt and ghee. Today I am going to the share Tamil Nadu version err precisely our family version of Panchamritham which we usually prepare during temple abhishekams. Yes, yearly once or twice we do abhishekams to our family deities in our native, and we usually prepare the Panchamrutham by ourselves. This time my MIL, wrote this recipe for me along with other family recipes. Panchamritham is very famous in Pazhani murugan temple and you can see pretty much all the shops selling these Panchamrutham in the palani temple and also in the foot hills of palani temple. The main ingredient that we use in Panchamrutham is banana and the palani murugan temple prasadam uses Virupachi variety, specific to that location. You need fresh fruits especially banana and dry fruits like raisins and dates and jaggery, honey, sugar rock candy or kalkandu and edible camphor or pachai karpooram. Mix and mash it well. That’s it. Panchamritham is ready. It’s our own version of jam with jaggery. :-) For this recipe I am using fresh banana and half an apple and for dry fruits I went with raisins, dried figs and dates of course. I had powdered jaggery at home and also cane/brown sugar. So used both for this recipe but you can always use either one. This is a super sweet prasadam as you can see we are using sweet fruits added with honey, jaggery and sugar candy. For additional flavor you can use cardamom powder but that’s completely optional. I went with ¼ tsp of cardamom powder.
Panchamrutham or Panchamirtham Recipe
Ingredients:
Banana – 1 Half apple Dates – 4 Dried Figs – 2 Raisins – 2 tsps Cane Sugar – 1 tbsp Powdered Jaggery – 1 tbsp Honey – 1 tbsp Cardamom Powder – ¼ tsp Sugar Candy – 2 tsps Ghee – 1 tsp Pachai Karpooram / Edible Camphor– ⅛ tsp or a pinch
Prep Work:
Chop the banana into round slices. Next, chop the apple into small pieces. Chop the dates and figs roughly.
Steps:
Add all the ingredients except sugar candy in a bowl and mix well. Using a potato masher, mash them all together. Make sure the banana is mashed nicely. Finally add the kalkandu and mix well.
That’s it. Panchamrutham is ready.
Notes:
In traditional Pazhani panchamirtham recipe, apple and figs are not used. But we generally mix all fruits that are available at home. So it’s just your preference. I didn’t use ghee much in this recipe. Either jaggery or cane sugar can be used both.
