Oatmeal is not the end of all oats recipes. You can create exciting recipes with oats. (PS – I love my oatmeal, and I have one in the platter as well) On my quinoa platter post, I mentioned that each grain has its own nutritional value, and I don’t want to compare any grains, and I still stand by that.  That’s why we started rotating the grains in our house. I switch between millets, quinoa, steel-cut oats, rolled oats, barley, rice, and wheat. Now and then, I use cauliflower rice as well. Like grains, I rotate flours; I use amaranth flour, ragi flour, almond flour, quinoa flour, and wheat flour.

Different Oats Varieties:

Before getting into the recipes, I want to talk about the different oats varieties. You will find instant oats, rolled oats, and steel-cut oats in the market.  All these are from oat groats, but depending upon how much they are processed, they differ in the look and size, and also the cooking time differs drastically.

Steel-Cut Oats:

Steel-cut oats are the least processed, and it takes longer time to cook. I use this to replace rice. It’s chewy, but we love the taste, and it holds the shape as well. I recently made steel-cut oats khichdi (with quick-cooking steel-cut oats though) and shared it on Youtube. Do check it out.

Rolled Oats | Old-Fashioned Rolled Oats:

Rolled oats are flat, and I compare them to poha or flattened rice. During the processing, they steam the oat groat first and then flatten them more like the flattened rice process. This process makes it perfect for quick recipes like oats bhel and cooks faster than steel-cut oats.

Instant Oats:

Instant oats are the most processed among all the oats, and they are pre-cooked and pressed very thin so that they cook instantly. Also, they tend to become mushy very quickly. Among the three varieties, I always pick steel-cut oats or rolled oats. And for today’s recipes, I have used rolled oats. I have few steel-cut oats recipes coming up. So stay tuned!

Healthy recipes with rolled oats:

Today, on my plate, I have four simple recipes with rolled oats. PS – I haven’t shared all the recipes on the blog yet. I will be sharing them soon and linking them all here.

Appetizer | Oats bhel-

This oats bhel is a no-oil chaat recipe with toasted oats. You can customize this according to your preference and relish it anytime.

Breakfast | Oats porridge/oatmeal

Like ragi congee, I can’t skip oats porridge or oatmeal when sharing recipes with oats. It’s simple oatmeal, which you can convert it into oats porridge also. I just topped it with some chia seeds and hemp seeds and served it with blueberries.

Breakfast | Lunch | Savory Overnight Oats

Think these savory overnight oats as pickled yogurt rice. I used tender mango pickle brine to make these overnight oats, and it was delicious even if I say so myself. I can’t wait to share this recipe.

Breakfast | Lunch | Dinner – Oats Dosa

This is the only oats dosa batter recipe that you will need. Be it oats dosa, oats uttapam, or oats rava dosa; you can make it all with this one batter. My proportion for the oats in this dosa is very high, but you can still make perfect and delicious dosa without fail. By now, you all know what I will be posting in October, more oats and ragi flour recipes. :-) So stay tuned!
