Konkani Dal

I love dal and only that love for dal made to explore all the different dal recipes from 26 Indian states, and I posted them all in September of 2016. You can find the entire list here. Dalithoy was on my list from last year but finally got a chance to post it now. All dal recipes might sound similar, and it’s a fact that most of the dal recipes use similar ingredients too. But there are subtle differences and these subtle differences makes the dal unique and delicious. So, what makes this dal recipe unique? Of course the coconut oil tempering and the ginger. I made this dal without any onion and garlic, and that’s how I learned it so going that route. :-) By the way, I adapted the recipe from Aayi’s Blog and as always modified to suit our taste buds.

I did not prepare this dal entirely in instant pot. I pressuce cooked the dal in instant pot and went with the traditional stove-top method for tempering. But you can do it in your preferred way. Here comes Dalithoy – the Konkani Dal recipe.

Dalithoy | Konkani Dal Recipe

Ingredients:

Toor dal – ½ cup Water – 2 cups Turmeric – ½ tsp Curry leaves – few Coconut Oil – 1 tsp Mustard seeds – ½ tsp Cumin seeds – ½ tsp Hing – ¼ tsp Green chilies – 2 Ginger Piece – 1 inch Cilantro – To garnish

Prep – Work:

Wash the toor dal and add 2 cups of water and turmeric powder. Pressure cook in your preferred way. Let the dal cool and mash it nicely.

Chop the green chilies, ginger, and cilantro.

How To Cook:

I cooked my Konkani Dal in the Instant Pot using Pot in Pot Method popularly known as PIP method – I will explain the PIP process in more details in my next post. But I cooked this dal for 8 minutes in manual mode on high pressure and let the pressure release naturally.

Steps:

Heat a pan and add the coconut oil. Once the oil is hot, add the mustard seeds, cumin seeds, and hing. Let it crackle. And then add the curry leaves, chopped green chilies, and ginger.

Saute for a minute and then add the cooked dal.

Add salt and mix well. Allow it to simmer for 3 to 4 minutes. Finally, add the chopped cilantro and turn off the heat.

Konkani Dal or Dalithoy is ready. Serve hot with rice or roti.

Notes:

Adjust the salt and green chili as per your preference. I did not add any jaggery, but if required you can include a small piece of jaggery. If you are not keen on making this dal as a vegan recipe, you can use ghee for tempering.
